Admission Policy

Admission to St. Mary’s School

St. Mary’s School is a private Catholic School. Because we are limited in size and resources, we also have limits for our admissions and financial assistance. For this reason, we categorize students for admission and consideration for financial assistance in the following order:

  1. St. Mary’s Parish Catholic students currently attending SMS;
  2. All other students currently attending SMS;
  3. Siblings of students who have attended SMS;
  4. Students from families registered in the St. Mary’s Parish;
  5. Students from families registered in other Catholic parishes; and
  6. All other students.

Admission Process for Preschool

Children, who are three years old on or before September 1st and completely independent in the bathroom, are eligible to participate in preschool on Tuesday and Thursday. Children who are four years old on or before September 1st and completely independent in the bathroom are eligible to participate in preschool on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

On occasion arrangements may be made to accommodate a child’s readiness skills and to work with family’s schedules to attend fewer or more days/week.

Admission Process for Kindergarten/First Grade

Kindergarten students musts be five years of age on or before September 1st of the school year being applied for and must be assessed by the kindergarten teacher for readiness skills, both physical and academic, prior to enrollment. Recommendations for readiness by preschool teachers will also be taken into consideration.  First grade students must be six years of age on or before September 1st.

If there are more applicants than can be accommodated then the prioritized enrollment policy (above) will be followed.

The parent can choose to keep the application active for openings during the year and/or carried over to the following school year.

New Students

New students will be on probation for a 30-day period. A conference will be scheduled between the parents, student, teacher, and administration to determine if both the student and the school benefit from the student’s placement at our school.

For students wishing to transfer after the first day of school, a 10-day probation period will be used.

Prior to admission of a transferring student, all requested records of the student must be received and reviewed by the school staff. A recommendation from the family’s pastor or other reference may be requested. An interview between the parents, the principal, and teacher, as well as an assessment between a teacher and student will be scheduled prior to admission.

The principal may allow a student to attend class pre-interview/assessment if meetings cannot be scheduled in a timely manner and everything points to successful enrollment.
