Maya Edgerly is the preschool teacher as well as the art co-teacher here at St. Mary's. She studied Outdoor Recreation Management and Environmental Education at Western Washington University; and later became certified in both adult and children's yoga. She threads her love for the outdoors as well as the creative movement and body awareness elements of yoga into her teaching style. The freedom to teach creatively as well as the positive energy at St. Mary's makes it a perfect school for Maya to be a part of. Maya loves the supportive community here at St. Mary's and is so inspired by the teachers, students and parents that create this positive atmosphere.
Kristine King has a BSI in Education from Texas A&M – Commerce, and a MA in Art History from the University of Arizona. She finds that children learn best from experiences and being actively engaged in those experiences. Mrs. King guides the students’ exploration so that their discovery and learning is intentional, and models spinning any event into an opportunity for growth. She values the diverse experiences children bring to the classroom as important tools for navigating foundational academic skills.

Mrs. Huerta earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology in 2000. Then, she served in the U.S. Peace Corps working with Grenada Save the Children and discovered a love of teaching children. When she returned, she earned her Master’s degree in Education. Mrs. Huerta chose to send her children to and to teach at St. Mary’s School because “St. Mary’s teaches the whole child.” At St. Mary’s students learn more than just reading, writing, and arithmetic, they are taught kindness, compassion, and respect.
I have had the great fortune to have been taught by phenomenal teachers and now I get to work along side phenomenal teachers here at St. Mary's. Music is what makes my world go around and PE provides the energy. I am from Kalamazoo, Michigan and have a Bachelor of Music degree from Hope College in Holland, Michigan. My hobbies are teaching music, playing music, reading about musicians, and composing music. I like ducks too.

Volunteer Art Teacherschool@smskodiak.org
After teaching art at Kodiak High School for 20 years and then retiring, Bonnie Dillard missed having young people in her life, so she volunteered to teach art at St. Mary's School. The students enrich her days and challenge her to keep growing as an artist herself. So far we have worked with drawing (a LOT of drawing), printmaking, collage and painting. It is the desire of this art teacher to encourage these amazing young students to nourish the creative spirit residing inside every one of them.
